My 5 year old daughter, who just started Kindergarten, was sent home Tuesday with head lice. My worst nightmare! She´s now been home 3 days including today because we can´t get rid of all the nits. I was literally in tears this morning as I once again brought her home. I have read everything on the web I find about head lice. I´m either looking for a miracle cure (hah!) or sympathy. I´m going "buggy"! :)

Kelly--
When my daughter had head lice I tried the over the counter "guarantees" and they did not work. I finally called her doctor and they told me to use a all natural lice treatment. I have also heard of baby oil and you have to put the baby oil on the hair and use cotton balls to wipe it off. Also do not wash your kids hair everyday the lice stick to clean hair and once their hair has some oil to it the lice cannot stick to the hair follicle. I have also heard that the shampoo called "Cholesterol" will help get rid of it as it makes the hair follicle slick and they cannot stay attached. GOOD LUCK!!!

Kelly, my daughter also got lice last year in Kindergarten and I was very upset as well. However, I worked very hard at it for about two days and was completely rid of the problem. I used Sea Breeze and coconut conditioner. First, wash hair and spray Sea Breeze directly onto hair (put in a spray bottle. don´t worry about it hurting her hair--it didn´t even dry my daughter´s out). Pulling out each nit is alot of work but I was very persistent about it in those few days. Also, I would saturate her hair with coconut conditioner (lice don´t like coconut) and put a bag on her head with it on for about an hour). I´m telling you--it worked! I didn´t even use over the counter lice kits at all! Keep spraying the Sea Breeze on for a few days and just let it dry on there--don´t rinse it out. Someone even suggested to me that I spray her hair regularly a little (when it´s dry) or the hood of her coat on a regular basis as a preventative measure. Hope this helps!

Thanks, Amy & Tracey,
Those are two tips I hadn´t heard.
As of today she was admitted back to school nit free thanks to my best friend and niece´s help in picking nits and cutting her hair. I just don´t ever want to do this again.

I can totally relate to what you are going through. I haev 4 girls and the oldest and youngest two got head lice several years ago. I was mortified. Come to find out it was my 10 year old that had the worst case you have EVER seen. We found out on the first day of our beach vacation. I was sick!!! My oldest was mortified, luckily she just had a few and once treated went away and never came back. The younger two....totally different story. I purchased the over the counter stuff - numerous times and looked on the internet til i was blue in the face. I went to a local childrens salon and they had something called Fairy Tale hair care http://www.fairytaleshaircare.com. This stuff is great!!! it got the majority out without any chemicals and smelled wonderful.
After many many hours of picking nits, missing school and work I finally went to the doctor in tears. (this was after two months). They told me some other things to try, like mayo and a shower cap. After trying that, I went back and they gave me a prescription for something to take by mouth. Whatever it was it worked. SO as a last resort if you still can´t get rid of those pesty mites, call the doctor and ask about the medicine they can prescribe for you.
Good luck!

THE NIGHTMARE OF HEAD LICE HAPPENS TO US ALL. IT IS NO REFLECTION ON YOUR PARENTING, CLEANLINESS, OR CHILDS HYGIENE. IT JUST HAPPENS. WHEN MY DAUGHTER FIRST CAME HOME FROM SUMMER CAMP WITH IT- I SPENT A SMALL FORTUNE ON OTD TREATMENTS TO NO AVAIL. I WAS TOLD ABOUT SEVERAL HOME REMEMDIES LIKE MAYONAISE AND BABY OIL... PROBLEM WAS... ONCE YOU TRY THOSE THINGS... THEN HOW DO YOU GET THE GREASY OILINESS OUT OF THEIR HAIR. HERE IS MY SOLUTION AND I MY GOTO EVERYTIME IT HAS OCCURED SINCE: I USED HAIR CONDITIONER! THAT IS RIGHT CONDITIONER. HERE IS THE PROCESS- APPLY EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF YOUR FAVORITE CONDITIONER- NOW I WILL TELL YOU I USE PATENE- SO THAT IS WHAT I USED- BUT I SUSPECT ANY THICK CONDITIIONER WILL DO THE TRICK! APPLY GENEROUSLY ALL OVER THE HEAD MAKING USRE TO COVER THE MOST PRONE AREAS, (BEHIND THE EARS, NAPE OF NECK, ETC.) ONCE IT IS GOOD AND GOOPY PILE THE HAIR UP ON TOP OF THEIR HEAD AND COVER WITH A PLASTIC BAG FROM YOUR GROCERY SHOPPING TRIP. TIE IT ON TIGHT AND LEAVE IT ON FOR A FEW HOURS... HERE IS WHAT HAPPENS- LIVE LICE ARE SUFFOCATED BY THE CONDITIONER AND LACK OF OXYGEN, NITS ARE SOFTENED AND WILL RELEASE MUCH EASIER WHEN COMBED OUT. USE THE LICE COMB YOU GOT WHEN YOU TRIED AND FAILED THE OTC LICE TREATMENTS. COMB HAIR IN SMALL SECTIONS, BE THOROUGH. BUT YOU WILL BE AMAZED THAT THE HAIR COMBS OUT EASIER, YOU WONT SEE ANY LIVE LICE AND YOU WONT HAVE TO RETREAT. SOUNDS SIMPLE! IT IS!

OMG head lice are the worst. My daughter first got them a few years ago in 5th grade. New town New school New dilemmas. The school nurse did a head lice check each week. However the nurse used the same tongue depressor (that she was running through everyones hair) on each kid. My daughter who had long trait hair half way down her back came home with lice. 4hrs and alot of patience later. I thought I got rid of the nits. The school nurse checked her the next day and said she was clean. Exactly two weeks later..."please come pick up your daughter, she has head lice". This time I did get rid of them. A few weeks later, she used the headphones at our local library. Guess what she got??? Yup all over again. She has had it a total of 5 times. She is now in 8th grade and has been lice free for a year. I was told that the lice LOVE clean hair. She did decide in one of her lice free weeks to cut off most of her hair and donate it. Good luck with the lice...YOU ARE NOT ALONE

Thank you all for your replies. The good news is we did overcome...for now I suppose...for good I hope. We did have to cut her hair a little because it´s so thick and curly. I´m totally paranoid now and check her like every other day. Now we comb her hair instead of brushing and load it up with gel or mousse. So far, so good! God Bless Y´all.

I understand about the super lice. When my girls go lice many years ago it was a nightmare to get rid of them. I used that over the counter junk that the school suggested. Since then I have learned about a product from the company where I buy all of my products. It is safe and has kept my sons keep from getting lice. I wish it was around when my girls were in school. I would love to show this green company. Just let me know if you would like to save money, your health, and recieve free products.
