Movie Buffs
Written by Maurice on August 12, 2008

I wanted to get the conversation started on interesting new movies and videos. I´m always looking for tips and reviews. I find that the best reviews are from real folks, not the professional critics.

I´ve seen quite a few movies this summer and have steered toward the funny stuff. This past weekend, it was Step Brothers will Will Ferrell, and it was hilarious!! It earned its "R" rating though for language, but if you´re a fan of Talledega Nights, you´ll get some great laughs out of this one. I´m looking forward to it coming out on video.

I go to a moms night out each week, and we have seen a couple of movies this summer...
Mama Mia...great "Chic Flick" I don´t know what it is rated...but it was fun and entertaining. You don´t see musicals out very often, and this had some great ones in it.
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2...another "Chic Flick" but more for the younger college age crowd. The acting wasn´t that great, but them again the actors are young and probably just finding their niche. America was the best actor in the movie.
Sex in the City...Rated R for a reason...a little too much nudity for me...I didn´t know it was on HBO before it went onto TBS. Great story for those who like happy endings.

With a 10-month old son, my movie going consists of walking out to the mailbox to retrieve a Netflix DVD. Watched recently "21" which is based on the popular book "Bringing Down the House" about MIT students who won lots of $$ playing blackjack through a system of card counting. Though this can´t start to approach "Rounders" as a gambling centered film, it is fairly entertaining.

Another recent rental was "The Bank Job". I would recommend it, as it apparently stays fairly true to the real life heist that took place in early 1970s London that it portrays.

I am way into anything done by an artists hand and that would include all Pixar movies. I still haven´t seen Wall-E but hope to find a spare couple of hours sometime soon before it´s out of the theaters. Has anyone had a chance to see it?

DVD Rental - "The Great Debaters". Though a tad cliched and a bit ambitious with all of the messages it seeks to portray, this film, directed by Denzel Washington, was very entertaining. Denzel is his typical self. Forest Whitaker and his son play father-son roles in this film very well. In total, it is a feel-good, underdog story film quite suitable to adolescent age and above.
